Our History
Proof of the Principles

Steel Dynamics Roanoke Bar Division began producing steel products for manufacture and distributors in 1955. We believed that we could produce the highest-quality products at the lowest possible cost by continually integrating the latest in steel-making technology. Our company was to be efficient and profitable, with a basic commitment to our customers and our employees. Since that time, we have energetically pursued this mission. We were the first mini-mill to convert to a continuous steel-casting process. We have expanded, modernized, and computerized every area of our operation. We have diversified to supply our own raw materials, purchasing Shredded Products Corporation in 1974. In 1994, we relocated Shredded Products to a more productive and cost-efficient facility in Rocky Mount, Virginia. We expanded into the fabrication of steel products. In 1975, we merged with John W. Hancock, Jr., Inc., a manufacturer of open-web steel joists in nearby Salem, Virginia. In 1985, we acquired a second manufacturer of steel joists, Socar, Inc., with plants in South Carolina and Ohio. In 1998, Steel of West Virginia became a wholly owned subsidiary, expanding our product range with the addition of new products and providing an outlet for billets. In 2006, the Roanoke Electric Steel Corporation was acquired by Steel Dynamics, Inc., and is now the Roanoke Bar Division. From the beginning, our steel company has been committed to providing our customers with the best service and employing the caliber of personnel required to fulfill that commitment. Our dedicated employees form the true foundation of Steel Dynamics Roanoke Bar Division. It is their effort that ensures the success of our company.
